This vintage postcard dates from 1917 and depicts a cartoon soldier and a little rhyme about signing up; "I've joined the army now you know, I'm simply mad to fight the foe - But when Mother saw me, upon my davy, she said "Thank you We've got a Navy!"

The back is addressed to "Mrs Cross" of The Manor at Repps, near Great Yarmouth. The message, which is written in blue ink, reads:

"Dear Mrs Cross, Just a line to let you know I am still alive and alright - I can't write a lot just now, but will let you know all the news as soon as I have time.".

It is signed "Best love, Billy" and continued with "221576 Driver W. Tann", this is William Tann who was a driver with the Royal Engineers during the First World War (a copy of the medal card is available on the National Archives website).
