Patroclus was the friend (and probably lover) of the Greek hero Achilles. During the Trojan War he dressed in Achilles' armour to encourage the Greeks to fight, but he was killed by the Trojans who believed they had killed the greatest of the Greek heroes. His funeral games are described in part of Homer's Iliad.
