The Empress Matilda plunged England into civil war as she battled her cousin Stephen for the throne. Technically she was next in line as she was the daughter of the previous king, Henry I, but no one wanted a woman in charge, so they decided to go with her cousin instead.

Matilda had the last laugh though, as her son inherited from Stephen and became Henry II.
