Queen Elizabeth

Sir John Ernest Neale was the leading historian of Elizabethan England of his generation. Along with holding academic positions at Manchester and UCL, he was also a museum trustee and a Fellow of the British Academy.

This book is a first edition of his first work on Queen Elizabeth and is signed by the author.

This book has blue cloth boards with an embossed image of an eagle wearing a crown. The title and authors name are in gilt emboss on the spine but the gilt is quite faded, and the boards are a little dirty, in particular there are two small white marks on the back board.

Inside the book on the first page is a small dedication in ink that reads "To R. Lythgoe, an invaluable member of the Neale Transport Co., with gratitude J.E. Neale", which means that this book has been signed by the author.

The book has a deckle edge (untrimmed) text block. There are two dark pencil lines down the first page of chapter one but otherwise the rest of the pages are clean and free of foxing marks. The spine is a little cracked between pages 86 and 87 but the binding is tight and secure, and all pages (including multiple black and white prints of portraits and other images) are included.

Overall this book is in good condition and would be an excellent purchase for any fan of Tudor or Elizabethan history.
