Une Nichee de Gentilshommes

This vintage book is a Russian story translated into French. The title translates as “Home of the Gentry”, an 1859 novel written by the Russian author Ivan Turgenev.

It tells the story of Fyodor Ivanych Lavretsky. Lavretsky marries a young woman who then has an affair, when he discovers the betrayal he leaves her and moves home, where he falls in love with his cousin Liza. The book is considered to be an expression of Turgenev’s thoughts as he approached middle age, and was translated from Russian into several languages.

This book has cream-coloured boards with green and lilac embossed lettering and illustration on the front board and then spine. The spine has been very discoloured, showing as more of a yellowy tan colour than the original cream. The boards are clean, with a few light dents along the top and bottom from repeated used, and the top and bottom of the sign are bent and lightly frayed.

There is some foxing on the first page, and a slightly indication of some water damage on the second page. The spine has cracked between a coloured illustration and the title page, and there is a sign of further cracking between pages 96 and 97. However the binding does appear to be secure and there do not appear to be any missing pages. There are no pencil marks, and apart from the first page the rest of the book is free of foxing marks, nor does there appear to be any further evidence of water damage.

The publishing date is unknown, but I’d estimate it as a pre-1930’s edition.

Overall this book is in okay condition, it couldn’t be used as a gift but if you’d like to read a literature classic translated in to French then you may find this book is just the thing for you!
