This is a 1928 edition of the book “Selected Operas” which was written by Sir William Schwenck Gilbert, one half of Gilbert and Sullivan. This book contains four operas which he wrote with Sullivan; "Trial by Jury", "Patience; or Bunthorne's Bride", "The Yeoman of the Guard; or The Merryman and his Maid", and "The Gondoliers; or The King of Barataria".
The operas are written out in the book in script form, and while the songs are included there are no musical scores.
Title: Selected Operas – First Series Author: W.S. Gilbert Publisher: Macmillan & Co. Limited Publication Year: 1928 Pages: 200 Size: 11.5 cm x 17.5 cm
This book has soft leather dark blue boards with gilt lettering and illustrating on the spine. There’s a large gilt school mark on the front board for “Verdin County School, Winsford, Cheshire”. The top of the spine is worn with more wear marks along the edges of the spine. There is a small tear on the back left of the back board, and a mark that appears to have been some kind of sticker (the mark itself isn’t sticky though).
The spine is in good condition and the binding is secure. All the pages are present and clean, with no pencil or foxing marks.
There is a dedication note on the inside front cover from the “Verdin County School, Winsford” which is dedicated to “Helen Cecily Ethel Margaret Rummell”(?) dated 29th January 1929.
Overall this is a lovely little book which would be a nice gift any fan of the opera.
