Louis XIV became King of France at the young age of five, with his mother Anne of Austria acting as Regent for him. In total Louis reigned for over 72 years, during which time he greatly expanded the Palace of Versailles, oversaw multiple military victories, had numerous children (both legitimate and otherwise) and grandchildren, reformed the treasury and French legal code, and witnessed the expansion of French colonies across the world. He is remembered with the epithets "Louis the Sun King" (hence the yellow background of this badge) and "Louis the Great".
