Theseus was a Greek hero who was claimed to be the founder of the city of Athens. The most famous myth concerning him is that of the Minotaur. Theseus succeeded in defeating the Minotaur of Crete and returned to Athens. His father King Aegeus believed he was dead and committed suicide, leaving the crown to Theseus. He is also a main character in Euripides' tragic play, Hippolytus.
