Emma of Normandy

Emma of Normandy became Queen of England when she married Aethelred the Unready by whom she had three children. After Aethelred died she married the Viking king Canute, probably agreeing to the marriage in order to secure the safety of her sons by Aethelred. After Canute's death Emma helped her son by him, Harthacanute, gain the throne, and then helped her son by Aethelred claim the throne on the death of his half-brother. She died in 1052 and her remains were interred at Winchester cathedral.
