Samuel Pepys is a well-known figure in English historical literature due to his diary. In it he notes both his personal problems with his wife and the events in wider society. His records of the Great Plague and the Great Fire of London are very useful as a source for historians studying these key events (he also kissed Catherine of Valois' corpse, not normally something you'd read in a diary!)
